Two roosters with a luxuriant plumage seem to challenge each other on this Yukari Royale, one on the body, the other one on the cap. Refinement of details and movement are emphasized by the delicacy of Chinkin (golden inlay) execution.
Symbols of the design
As the sun rises when the rooster sings, it was considered as a sacred animal, symbol of light, in many civilizations. In Japan it is the power of the rooster's song and its magic mirror which obliges Amaterasu, Sun Goddess, to leave its cave to light the world. That's the reason why in Shintoist temples roosters circulate freely. Custom imported from China, cock fighting (Tori-awase) was practised in the imperial court, from the Nera era to the Heian one (710-1185) and is still part of the most popular shows during the festivals.
Used technique
Chinkin uses carving chisels and a sheet of precious metal to engrave the design of the chosen decoration on the lacquered pen. Gold dust is then inlayed in the engraving. This technique which requires strong concentration and exceptional gesture control, brings sharpness and precision allied to a very expressive relief. Dot carving ( Tenbori) draws the head and the legs of the cock, whereas linear carving(Senbori) values the beauty of its plumage.
