Born in the Netherlands in 1853, Vincent van Gogh is among the most popular painters of the late 19th century, and his visionary ideas are now seen as precursors to modernism. His path of self-discovery began in 1869 with his first job as an art dealer, but it wasn’t until 1880, that he decided to become an artist. Once committed, he set to work with a passion, painting and drawing from the rural life around him before moving to Paris in 1886, where he began experimenting with colours and techniques inspired by Impressionism, the leading artistic movement of the time. After two years in Paris, he left for Arles in pursuit of an even more intense colour spectrum. There, he became very productive, painting such works as “The Harvest”, a vibrant landscape he was especially pleased with. His distinctive style now fully formed, Van Gogh continued on to Saint-Rémy-de-Provence in 1889, where he created further masterpieces including the Japanese-inspired “Almond Blossom”. Clearly working at the vanguard of Post-Impressionist art, Van Gogh breathed life into his art with his bold use of colour, dramatic brushstrokes and the impasto technique, whereby he applied paint thickly to his canvas to create depth, emotion and movement. Vincent van Gogh was incredibly prolific considering the short time he was active as a painter. In just one decade he created over 800 paintings and more than 1,100 drawings and sketches. With the Montblanc Masters of Art Homage to Vincent van Gogh Limited Edition 4810, Montblanc celebrates Vincent van Gogh and especially emphasises his time in Arles with design details reflecting the Provencal wheatfields and one of his most famous paintings, “Sunflowers”.

• As homage for Vincent's fascination of traditional Japanese woodblock prints, the overall shape is inspired by a Japanese woodcutting knife (hangi-toh) while the cap is made from wood.
• Cap Top: Shape recalls the triangular subdivision of a perspective frame, while the engravings on the fittings are inspired by the screws holding it together. Engraving of Borinage as this was the place in France he decided to become an artist.
• Clip: His fondness for pipe smoking, to which he referred in many of his self-portraits, is captured in a subtle detail of the clip: the upper part is shaped like a pipe’s bowl and filled with yellow precious resin. A palette knife (used for Impasto technique) inspired lower part of the clip.
• Forepart engraving of fine lines inspired by Vincent’s technique of holding coloured yarns next to each other to try out different colour combination for his paintings.
• The engraved 1888 on the barrel ring - next to Vincent's signature in bright orange (taken from the Sunflower painting - commemorates the year when he moved to Arles.
• Barrel is decorated in shades of yellow and orange reflecting the sun-drenched landscapes of southern France that can also be found in his art works.
• The famous series of five sunflower paintings inspired the interpretation embossed on the nib.
