Product description
Two owls with piercing but friendly eyes to facilitate your concentration. One perched on a Japanese oak, the other one flying over the reeds, in a soft, soothing and inspiring harmony of ivory and gold.
Meaning of the design
From immemorial time, owl has been considered a magical and auspicious bird. In the West, it is the symbol of knowledge and awareness. In Roman mythology it was venerated as the God of Wisdom under the name of Minerva, while in Greece it was called Athena.
In Japan, it is a very popular symbol because the phonetic word for owl "Fukuro", consists of two words: "Fuku" meaning happiness and "Rou" which evokes something positive and joyful. It is supposed to bring good fortune in various situations and especially during the exams period.
Techniques used
The "Rankaku" technique, delicate and meticulous mosaic of tiny pieces of quail eggshell, gives a striking presence to both owls. The "Raden" one (inlay of mother-of-pearl) is used to emphasize their eyes renowned for the acuteness of their vision. The Japanese oak and reeds on the body of the pen are highlighted by the Taka Maki-e technique (relief application). A fine dusting of gold and vermilion particles (Togidashi Maki-e) brings a refined finish to the ends of the pen.
