It is one of the most widely-read and deeply-loved books of all time, a small tome that has affected lives around the world. It is fitting that The Alchemist is part of the noble genre, for the Brazilian author wrote his modern classic in Portuguese and the story commences in Andalusia.
A seemingly simple tale of Santiago, a shepherd seeking his fortune, the story takes the form of a travelogue and an adventure, introducing fascinating characters who influence his decisions. Santiago experiences life as a vendor of glass, and meets a mysterious shaman who offers him guidance in absentia, along with a pair of small stones to aid his decision making at crucial moments.
Continuing his wandering after a period as a shopkeeper's assistant, he joins a caravan and meets an Englishman on his own quest: to find a legendary alchemist. The tale twists and turns, as Santiago learns of his own inner strength, his powers, revealed to him by ? the Alchemist.
It is both gentle and shocking, the journey exposing Santiago to budding romance and terrifying bandits, the exotica of oases and the desert, as well as the mysteries of alchemy itself. While completing his quest to see the pyramids, Santiago experiences far more than he would have as a shepherd, the life lessons leading to a revelatory conclusion.
The Alchemist pen is issued in an edition of 1987 pens in total, in honor of the year that it was published. The series will consist of 71 solid gold (38 fountain pens and 33 roller balls), for the 71 languages into which it has been translated. 900 pens will be offered in resin and sterling silver (450 fountain pens and 450 rollerballs) to represent the number of copies in the first edition's print run. A further 1000 pens will be produced entirely in sterling silver with accents in translucent enamel. There are four colors of enamel, representing the four elements; air, fire, earth and water. Only 125 fountain pens and 125 roller balls will be made in each color. Lastly 16 pens (8 fountain pens and 8 rollerballs) will be produced in gold with diamond enhancements, these precious gems symbolizing the riches that feature prominently in the saga.
