Meaning of the design
Force of nature, king of wild beasts, the tiger is considered as a protective force of houses and temples to take away bad luck and give courage. Brave and determined, it is an example to follow. But the most valiant warrior must show humility. According to an ancient Japanese proverb, the strongest must protect the weakest and in exchange, the weakest serves the strongest. Thus, the power of the tiger moves predators away from the bamboos while the flexibility of the bamboos gives it a perfect den.

Techniques used
The Chinkin technique consists of covering the Urushi lacquer pen and then engraving patterns by using special cutting chisels and a precious metal sheet. A gold powder is then encrusted in the engraving. As soon as the work is started, the cutting can no longer be corrected. No mistake is allowed, each chisel stroke requires a very high concentration. The difficulty is accentuated by the curved surfaces like those of the pens. Thus, the lacquer artist must possess a control of the gesture which requires an immense power of thought and exceptional skills.
