Description
On this emblematic piece of the permanent Namiki collection, three golden fishes are waving gracefully. Their shimmering colours that contrast with the deep black Urushi lacquer in the bottom of the pen, as well as the aquatic decor sprinkled with gold and silver, create a subtle harmony of timeless elegance.
Meaning of the design
Koi carp coming from China holds an important place in Japanese culture because, according to the legend, it would have swim up the Yellow River to become a dragon and fly into the air. Its ability to go against the current of the rivers and waterfalls of Asia has made it a symbol of courage, perseverance and even virility. Its homonymy with the Chinese word Chinyui meaning prosperity has transformed it into a symbol of wealth and success. Its lifespan (about one hundred years), a symbol of longevity.
Techniques used
Shishiai-Togidashi Maki-e (polished relief) is the simultaneous use of several techniques of maki-e: Taka-Maki-e of silver and 24 carat gold, high-relief technique where Urushi and charcoal powder are used to reveal the pattern in high relief. This method creates a three-dimensional pattern with living depth. And Hira Maki-e where gold or silver powder is sprinkled on the pattern and then fixed with a new layer of polished lacquer. After drying the pattern appears by charcoal polishing.
