Namiki Emperor Kylin fountain pen
Description
Richness of luxuriant decoration, shimmering colors, debauchery of gold powder. It was the least to be done to glorify the Kylin, this mythical animal little known in the West but already revered in ancient China. Dubbed as Chinese unicorn, it is a symbol of good fortune and prosperity.
Meaning of the design
Deer, bull, horse or fish? The Kylin, like the dragon, is an animal with a composite appearance, possessing some of the attributes and powers of each of these animals. In Japan, it belongs to the group of the 4 sacred animals, with the phoenix, the dragon and the turtle. Symbol of luck, peace and wealth, it often decorated swords and other weapons. It is surrounded by bamboo leaves and paulownia, auspicious symbols themselves.
Techniques used
Not less than 4 different techniques of Maki-e are deployed to honor this fabulous animal. Takidashi maki-e (technique of highlighting the pattern, layer after layer, with lacquer and charcoal powder) to enhance the Kylin, Raden (inlaid mother-of-pearl) to emphasize its scales, Togidashi maki- (gold or silver particles inlaid and coated with several layers of lacquer) and Hira maki-e (dusting of gold or silver attached by lacquer layers) to chisel paulownia and bamboo leaves. And ultimate refinement, the clip fades into the decor, by a gold powder lacquering.
