Namiki Yukari Herb Decoration fountain pen
Description
Rock Garden, Pine Needles and Herb Decoration.
With these three typical themes of Japanese culture, Kokkokai School still demonstrates the finesse of its work where traditional themes and graphics marry gracefully.
Meaning of the design
Rock Gardens: Zen Japanese gardens are dry gardens composed of sand or gravel and rocks. Graphic patterns suggesting the water are drawn by rake on the gravels around the rocks. These gardens are supposed to encourage meditation.
Pine needles (Matsuba): its everlasting foliage and rot-proof resin have made pine a symbol of longevity. It is auspicious to plant it in front of houses. Needles always going by pairs, the pine is also the symbol of the couples.
Herb decoration (Kusu dama): These balls are made of paper flowers (origami). Originally used to hold incense or potpourri, they are now used for decoration or as gifts.
Used techniques
These three pens are treated in Togidashi-Hira Maki-e: a base covered with an oil-free black lacquer which is then sprinkled with gold and silver to create the motif. This is then completely covered with Urushi and, after drying, the pattern reappears by polishing with charcoal. The decorations of Herb Decoration and Pine Needles are enriched with inlays of mother-of-pearl (raden). That of Rock Garden with inlays of gold.
