Namiki Yukari Raden Firefly fountain pen
Description
Night time contemplation in Japan is a popular national activity celebrated by many festivals. These three glittering pens evoke the beauties of it, highlighted by the technique of Raden.
Meaning of the design
Nocturnal firefly watching, Hotaru, is one of the summer pleasure of Japanese people. In the past, fireflies hunt was a very popular pastime among Japanese bourgeoisie. Moreover, many prints of the Edo period show young women having a walk with boxes to capture fireflies. Tsukimi is also a moment dedicated to moonlight. The 15th night of the lunar calendar is a night when the moon is the roundest and brightest of the year, which symbolizes unity of the family and gathering.
Yozakura. Cherry blossoms are beautiful under the sun but in the evening, when they are subtly illuminated by pink lanterns and when each flower shines like a star, it is an unforgettable sight.
Used techniques
Wonderful Raden, using thin strips of pearly lining removed from some shells and cut into small pieces. These fine particles are assembled to form iridescent patterns. They are then coated with Urushi to keep them in place. Everything is polish to get a perfect finish.
