Namiki Yukari Royale Noshi Bundle fountain pen
Description
This luxuriant, colorful and beautifully curved traditional motif, elegantly wraps itself around the pen in a very dense and graphic composition that brings it great modernity.
Meaning of the design
Originally, this lucky charm consisted of thin strips of flattened and dried flesh of molluscs (abalone) whose smell was supposed to make the demons run away (Tabane noshi means bouquet of abalone). It is also a symbol of longevity since the word noshi is a homonym of the character signifying continuity. According to some shintos rituals, it was formerly used to decorate the packaging of gifts. Later on, the strips of abalone were replaced by colored silk ribbons, gathered by a golden string, like a big knot, then by strips of paper. Even today, this very decorative motif is used to adorn gift packages on special occasions. It is also found on kimonos, obises, screens, boxes etc.
Used Techniques
To highlight the richness of this seductive motif, three techniques are used: Taka Maki-e, a high-relief technique covered by gold or silver powder, Hira Maki-e which consists of dusting a 24-carat gold powder, and Togidashi Maki-e, whose gold or silver dusting uses larger particles of metal than those used in the Hira-Maki-e technique.
